Q: What's all this then?

A: Milieux is a multi-fandom high school/village RP.

Q: What is a "Milieux"?

A: Milieux is the plural of milieu.

Okay, that's a smart ass answer. Sorry. "Milieu" is a fancy name for the concept of a fictional world or setting. (Buffyverse, Dragonlance, Chthulu Mythos, Diskworld, Marvel Universe, and so on.) If you'd like to learn more about this word Wikipedia is your friend!

Q: Can anybody join?

A: Anybody 17 and older can submit a character to join. Currently, new players are limited to a max of 3 characters. (1 Teacher, 1 Student, 1 Villager)

Also, players will probably need a Gmail account (one per player, not one per character), as we are planning some nifty things involving Google Calendar and such like that. If you don't have a Gmail account, don't worry about it, we can get you one.

Q: What kind of characters can I apply with?

  • We accept characters from all canons (TV, book, movie, comic, anime, manga, cartoon, etc.) but not OCs (original characters), real people, or characters that have the generic fandom of "Mythology".
    • Fictionalized historical characters (Such as those in the HBO Shows Rome and Deadwood) are acceptable
    • If you wish to play a mythological character that is not from an 'established fandom', like Xena for instance, you must provide at least three sources as your fandom. (Bullfinch's Mythology, Such and Such translation of So and So's epic poem Blah Blah, The Idiot's Guide to..., etc.)
  • There can be only one! ... version of any character in play at any given time. (Only one Bruce Wayne, only one James Bond, only one Jamie Madrox... well, you know what we mean.)
  • You may "transfer" a character you have played previously in a different game.
  • We would prefer if you spend some time with us before apping a teacher.

Q: Are the restrictions described above set in stone?

A: These restrictions are NOT set in stone. They're more like guidelines. After you've been playing with us for at least one IG school term you can app a 4th character, and even a 5th if the 5th character fills some in game need.

Q: Tell me more about this school/village.

A: Both the school and much of the town is funded by M.B.
The school is something of a reformatory... Mostly, students are sent there because a more traditional schooling hasn't quite worked out for some reason or other. It also lets the students work at their own pace, so a particularly gifted student might be interested in the school because they can pursue their interests unhindered. It will have a mix of independent study oriented schooling.and more traditional class formats. (It's up to how the teacher would like to run it.) The village is rather similar. Those who have had difficulty fitting in with their "peers" or simply want a place to work in peace often find their way, in one way or another, to Milieux. Facilities for research of all sorts are available. (Arcane, technological, tactical, etc.) The Village is also just a nice place to live and perhaps start a business or just get away from it all.

Q: Who or what is M.B.?

A: Good question, wish we had an answer to it.
Some might think "M.B." is, or was, a person. And that Milieux (the village and the school) is to "M.B." what the Smithsonian Institute is to James Smithson. Others may consider M.B. to be something of a rather darker nature. The only thing that is certain is that M.B. is very interested in the advancement of just about any discipline one can think of, and that those who "Live, Work, and Learn" (the motto on the village crest) within its borders are given the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

To what end?

  • shrug*

Q: What kind of time commitment are we talking about here?

A: Milieux is a PRETENDY FUN TIME GAME. And as such, we're not really interested in dropping a bunch of requirements on you. Currently we have no requirements However, this is a community, which is as much about interacting with, and entertaining, each other as it is about making your own fun. So we'd like to make a few recommendations. At the very least...
TEACHERS: Should post their class on the appointed day (or the night before) and "office hours" at once per week.
STUDENTS: Should "ping" into the classes you signed up for and do something once per week. (We don't require that you get a "job" or start/join a club, but these things help.)
VILLAGERS: Should, whether you have a "job" or a business, post for your place of gainful employment for business hours on whatever day you've agreed to do so. And do something vaguely social like or at least involve the possibility of bumping into people once a week.

Q: What kind of time frame do I have to make posts?

A: Milieux will be played in real-time'ish time. Milieux is outside New Orleans, LA, USA. So it is on Central Time. However, it's probably true that the majority of players don't live in that time zone, so flexibility is afforded to accommodate everybody.
With that in mind, for the sake of everybody's sanity, we recommend players please try to make your posts for a particular day during the time that it is actually that day somewhere on the planet in general. Posting even a day or two early for some kind of special event to maximize everybody's ability to participate, or continuing to "slow play" an interaction a day or two after is more than acceptable.

Q: How do posts work?

A: Think of a post as a location, where things can happen. For example, teachers post their classes in the "milieux_ecole" community and students ping into those.

Yes, our comms have pretentious French names. I (The admin who plays Screwtape) thought it was funny, but I'm told that it is less "funny ha ha" and more "hard to spell". So I apologize in advance. :D

Q: How do people arrive in the town?

Do they willingly go there, or are they forcibly pulled there? Do hey mysteriously appear there in the morning after going to sleep one night?

A: People arrive in town however is convent for the player. (Within reason. Try not to destroy or mod anybody/thing without permission when you arrive. When in doubt, refer to rule #1 So far, people arrived of their own accord for the most part, though there are exceptions.

Q: I'm applying as a student/teacher. Where do I go to select classes?

A: We have class sign ups several times a year. Near the end of the current term we ask teachers to submit their classes for the next and shortly after a sign up post is announced in the OOC comm to the whole game for students to sign up. If you are bringing in your student mid-term, your character, once they are accepted, won't have to attend classes until the next round of classes are announced. Your student character can move into the dorms directly, however, and audit classes that are currently underway with teacher permission. You can always see the current list of classes at this this link.

Q: What sort of rules to you have for Milieux?

A: They're more like guidelines.

Q: No rules? A: Okay, do have rules

Q: What happens if a player needs to be (gasp, horror) disciplined?

A: Under this rare occurrence, the mods will handle this privately as possible, as to limit any amount of embarrassment to the player involved. We are not in the business of public shame or humiliation.
