Background

(Warning, spoilers for Angel, seasons 3-5)

Connor Angel was "born" in a back alley in Los Angeles, after a long and troubled pregnancy by his mother, Darla. Pursued by a vengeful Vampire Hunter, she and Angel, the boy's father finally ran out of places to hide, and, in the throes of labor, she staked herself, leaving the infant behind with his father.

For the next few weeks, Connor was sought by many parties, some seeking his death, some to experiment on him, some, to save him. Wesley Price took him from his cradle after reading a prophecy that Angel would kill him, and sought to take him to safety; the Vampire Hunter, Holtz.

But Holtz betrayed Wesley, took the baby, and found himself cornered by the forces of Wolfram and Hart, a Demon named Sajahn, and Angel. Cornered, he leaped into a portal opened by Sajahn, into a hell dimension named Quartoth. There, Connor was raised by Holtz, to fight demons, survive in the hell they found themselves in, and most importantly, to hate Angel. As he grew, Connor earned such a fearsome reputation that even the Demons of hell feared him and called him the Destroyer.

Eventually, he found a way back to Earth, arriving only days after he had been taken, despite having lived over a decade and a half. His relationship with Angel was at once, antagonistic, but Angel slowly began to get through to his son. And Cordelia gained his trust by cleansing him of the taint of Quartoth. Though even she could not remove the mental and emotional scarring. Holtz' revenge would not be so easily thwarted however, as he framed Angel for his own death, provoking Connor into sealing his father in a metal coffin, and dumping it into the sea. After several months, Angel was freed, and confronted his son, kicking him out on his own, and found himself back to square one in terms of trust, on both sides.

When an amnesiac Cordy came to Connor for help, he took her in immediately, and began to develop feelings for her, which she appeared to reciprocate. What he did not know however was that Cordelia was possessed by an ancient power seeking to return to Earth.

Evil!Cordelia continued to manipulate Connor for the rest of the year, turning him against his father and his friends, and finally, even his mother. As the spirit of Darla pleaded with him to turn back from the path he was walking, Connor aided Cordy in the sacrifice of a young woman, who's blood they needed to finally bring forth the power inhabiting Cordy.

Once the power (later named Jasmine) was released, she quickly and easily won the hearts and minds of the people of Los Angeles. Connor, despite being immune to her spell became her trusted confidant and lieutenant. He fought alongside Angel Investigations while they were under her influence, and against them once they'd been freed. After Angel broke her power over the city, she resorted to more drastic measures and went on destructive rampage. Connor finally killed her, an act which sent him over the edge, and he attempted to kill himself and several others.

Angel, as ever, arrived to stop him, and after a heated battle inside a department store, Connor was defeated. Wolfram and Hart, striking a bargain with Angel, removed Connor's memories, and everyone else's memories of him. He was placed with a foster family and his and their memories were altered so they thought he had always been their son.

A year later, the sorcerer who had placed the spell on Connor in the first place sent the boy a few "messages" in the form of being run down by a van, and a squad of Demons. All this was designed to send him to Angel, and make him aware of his powers. Because the man, Vail, needed Connor to fulfill the real prophecy about him, that Connor would kill Sajahn.

Angel accompanied Connor to Vail's house, but was unable to help in the actual battle, which Connor was in grave danger of losing. That is until Wesley, having discovered Angel's deal with Wolfram and Hart, smashed the receptacle for Connor's original memories, restoring them and his own in the process. Connor killed Sajahn, but seemed to have emerged no less well adjusted, due to still having his false memories as well.

Later, he aided Angel in battling Wolfram and Hart, arriving just in time to save his father, but at Angel's behest, fled before the big finish.

Where Canon and Connor go separate ways

In Canon, Connor was old enough that when he got his new memories, he had just graduated High School, and by the time the audience saw him again, he was attending Stanford University.

In Mileux, Connor was one year younger, and therefore was heading into his senior year of High School, which he as spending in Mileux. His experience with Vail and Sajahn happened sooner as well, with the Van hitting him in New Orleans, and it was Susan Sto Helit, rather than his father, who accompanied him to Vail's residence, after Faith informed him of Vail's intentions.
